*** Last chance to get two great beers ***

Deschutes Black Butte XXI 22oz:

A very unexpected delivery of Deschutes Black Butte XXI showed up here in Portland. This happy windfall will not last long so grab it while you can.

===========================================

Here is what the brewery has to say about it......

A tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since its release in 1988. This special Reserve Series brew is an extreme version of Black Butte Porter that the Deschutes brewers enhanced with several pounds Bellatazza coffee, Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs and by aging parts in Stranahan’s whiskey barrels. These regional partners from Bend, Seattle and Denver, respectively, each provide quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.

Alaskan Smoked Porter 2008 22oz:

Last chance at 2008 Alaskan Smoked Porter. This will be our last shipment before the 2009 shows up.

Alaskan Smoked Porter is credited with helping revive the German rauchbier style, or smoke-flavored beers, in the United States. The most award-winning beer in the history of the Great American Beer Festival, Alaskan Smoked Porter has a dark, robust body and pronounced smoky flavor. This unique beer is produced in limited vintages each year and may be aged in the bottle much like fine wine. It ages very well and will continue to mellow and increase in complexity for some time. For those of you who love the hops, you will probably like it better young, for the rest of us aging it for a year or two smoothes and mellows it.

*** Looking for a bargain? ***

Two Baron brand beers are now at 33% off regular price (sales price is currently listsed)

Baron Rumpelstiltskin 22oz:

Deep brown / mahogany in color with a thin tan head. This 9.5% Rauch Doppelbock comes with whiffs of fruit and a light roasted malt that is hidden behind the large rolling smoke aroma. The flavor has a grape plum hit up front with a chocolate and smoke finish.

Baron Uber-Weisse 22oz:

This Weizen Bock is cloudy brown with a medium bubbly head. The aroma is chocolaty malt with yeasty banana and clove notes. The flavor is of roasty caramel, cherries, and wheat graininess. The lower carbonation gives it a smooth medium body.

*** New Beers ***

Rogue Maierfest Lager 22oz:

This lager pours a beautiful copper orange color. The aroma is malty with bready grainy tones and a spicy herbal hop. The flavor starts toast and bready. It moves to nutty quality then a mild grassy hop with a crisp texture. The finish is full and creamy smooth.

Dixie Blackened Voodo Lager 12oz:

Amber brown in color, this lager pours with a light tan head. The aroma is malty with a touch of toffee and chocolate. The flavor is roasty with some coffee bitterness and light hop finish.

St. Louis Cassis 375ml:

Pinkish purple, creamy head and a thin lace. The aroma is big on the fruit and lactic sour with a little musty earth. Fizzy current juice in flavor with tart lactic and touch of barnyard.

Gouden Carolus Hopsinjoor 330ml:

A Belgian style IPA it pours golden in color and has a massive rocky head. The aroma is hoppy and estery, leafy, spicy, with lemon fruitiness. The flavor is honey sweet up front with grassy and bitter hops. The fruity aspect comes off orange and melon. Bitter enough to make any American brewer proud and strong and estery to be a true Belgian.

Gouden Carolus Cuvee Van De Keizer Blue 750ml:

Whoa Mamma!!! This is everything a Belgian grand cru should be, that is strong - 11%, sweet, and a massive fruity ester. Tasting of figs, dark cherries and candied fruit. If you are a Belgo-phile like me you absolutely must get this one.

Gouden Carolus Cuvee Van De Keizer Red 750ml:

Bright yellow orange with a touch of haze and it pours with a thick frothy head. The aroma is spicy with a pear and apple fruitiness. The flavor is sweet and fruity with peach and pear. There is just a tad of hops at the end and it hides the 10% well.

*** Back In Stock ***

Chateau Lorane Vandal Gold 750ml:

I have always loved this exquisite offering from Chateau Lorane and this years bottling has top all pervious vintages. This traditional mead pours a deep gold / orange color. By far one of the darkest I have seen available. The aroma is bright and lively up front with a sweet mead character and woody earthy tones from the buckwheat honey. The flavor starts off honey sweet then the acidity comes in to balance it out it moves to those wonderful subtle buckwheat tones and finishes with just a hint of mint. This mead has a unique flavors profile. It is sweet but well balanced and has a nice body without ending sticky. A+

Pike XXXXX Extra Stout 22oz:

The color is darkest brown bordering on true black. The head is big and dark tan. The aroma is roasty with a whiff of grass and flower hops. The body is thick and the flavor is roasty with molasses and coffee. This is one big stout without being too sweet. The dark roasted malt down plays against the light sweetness and makes for one massive stout

Cascade Lakes Paulina Pilsner 22oz:

This local, fresh, clean, crisp pilsner pours a light gold with a sudsy head. The aroma is of biscuit malt and floral hops. The flavor is bready with a spice hop with a clean flora finish.

*** New Beers ***

Boulvevard Saison 750ml:

This farmhouse saison style brew pours a bright straw yellow. Its head is big and billowy and is persistent. The aroma is spicy and lemony with plenty of yeast character. The flavor is peppery with a touch of clove, grainy and fruity. The body is soft and smooth and the finish is earthy ginger. Excellent!!!

Boulevard Double Wide IPA 750ml:

Painted red / amber in color this doublewide with a thick roof of dense foam. The aroma is of pale / crystal malts and earth / citrusy hops. The flavor has some upfront sweet malty caramel but moves into the resinous piney and citrus hops. The late bitterness layers over the sweet malt for a bittersweet finish.

Southern Oregon Na Zdravi 22oz:

This Czech style pilsner is spot on!!! Not many breweries can do one that impresses me but S.O.B. has done a great job. A brilliant yellow gold color. The head pours well and settles into a fingers worth of head after some time. The aroma is of Saaz spice and pale malt. The flavor is biscuit / cracker in malt (as long as it is not too cold) and those Sazz come shining through again. It is currently (8/09) my brew of choice.

Mactarnahans Lips Stinger 22oz:

This quaffable farmhouse ale is the next offering in MacTarnahan’s 22oz seasonal lineup. The color is light golden yellow with an adequate head. The aroma is tropical fruity with earthy undertones. The flavor has an easy peppercorn flavor with pale malt and fruity grassiness.

Pike Monks Uncle 22oz:

Orange / yellow in color with a finger or two of head. The head settles down with some nice lace. The smell is sweet with candy sugar, spicy ester and doughy yeast. The flavor is tropical fruity with pineapple and mango with pear and a touch of alcohol in the finish.

Eel River Acai Berry Wheat 22oz:

Peach / yellow in color this fruit beer pours with little head. To be honest I have no idea what an acai berry tastes like but this beer has a nice (read not sweet) berry flavor that is mostly raspberry with a light underlying blueberry hint. The flavor is light and wheaty with the above mentioned fruit notes and an easy hop finish. The health benefits of acai berry aside this is a well-done fruit beer. By that I mean not sweet, not overpowered by the fruit with a natural flavor with a real beer base.

*** Back In Stock ***

Laughing Dog Devil Dog 22oz:

Bright copper in color it pours with a thin but dense head. The aroma starts with a bit of sweet malt but quickly moves to the big fruity hop. With big orange and lemon tones along with some tropical pineapple and mango with maybe just a hint of peach. The flavor has a pervasive caramel malt but it is juicy hops and the honest 98 IBU bitterness that dominate. Sure there are beers that post higher IBUs but this brew is a real kick to the taste buds. There is no doubt that this bad dog is all about the hops, well that and the 10%.

Full Sail Old Boardhead 2008 22oz:

As usual Full Sail comes out with another fine vintage of Old Boardhead. Amber/orange in color with a small but tight head. Light fruity hop aroma with whiffs of caramel and cake. Soft and malty up front than moves into the fruity hop flavors and finish quite bitter. At the time of this review the IBUs come shining through in the finish; this will calm down quickly in the next few months and settle into a more rounded finish. At 9% and easy smooth, this barley wine will age for a good 5 years plus and is yummily accessible now.

Eggenberg Urbock 23 330ml:

From those wacky Austrians who brought you Samichlaus, we are now carrying Urbock 23. This 9.6% golden bock is a tasty sipping treat. The aroma is of honey and yeasty bread. The flavor is sweet malt, herbal hop with a solid bitterness. Exactly what you would expect from the makers of Sami.

I was told that this was a 2000 vintage but since the bottles are not marked I have no way of verifying this. Since the other beers acquired in this sale dated from 1988 to 2003, I don’t doubt it.

*** New Beers ***

Russian River Collaboration 2007 22oz:

This beer comes with a bit of a story. It is a joint venture between Russian river and Avery brewing because they both had a beer called Salvation. Instead of filing legal action to make the other change the name of the beer, they decided to blend the two into a special brew. The only problem I saw was when I tasted this release back on 2007 it was way too young and had not reached its full potential. Knowing a good thing when I saw it I grabbed up a several cases and put them in the cellar to age. Now at one and a half years old it has reached its peak and it ready for sale. This aged beer comes in at a good price and has a full range of deep mature flavors.

This aged 2007 vintage beer pours with a color that is a deep ruby red with brown underpinning. The head is two and a half fingers high but settles into a thin layer with some nice lace. The aroma is amazing as it has big brown malts, cherries with port and prune at the end. The flavor has a great chocolate cake, raspberry syrup quality and a qualifying hop bitterness in the finish.

For those of you who frequent BeerAdvocate.com you may know that when batches of this beer has been reviewed young (when released) it has received a lot of B- and B ratings but this 2007 aged version receives an A+ in my book. Enjoy!

Levenworth Eight Mile Alt 12oz:

The German Alt style is a bit obscure but is tasty and robust. It is a malt driven style and the aroma of this beer is of toasted oats with a ting of hops. The flavor is very nutty with some hazel nut up front and a crisp spicy hop at the finish.

Levenworth Whistling Pig 12oz:

A brew that is a cross between an American wheat and a German Hefe. The aroma is big on the wheat with a touch of spice and tang. Although it lacks some of the Bavarian spice it did have the citrus notes of a good American Hefe.

Levenworth Boulder Bend 12oz:

Just as Widmer makes a great American Hefe, Levenworth make a great American Dunkelweizen. It starts clean and crisp with the wheat. It moves to the darker flavors with date and chocolate. Not big and complex but neither is the style.
